Storm chasers miss lightning hit by five minutes

NORTHERN NSW Severe Weather storm chasers Rosie Kew and Michael Bath were kept busy in yesterday's storm that hit the Upper Clarence.

They were only five minutes from seeing a large pine tree struck by lightning.

"(We were) chasing around Upper Clarence and our chase came to an end at Old Bonalbo rest stop / free camp with a tree struck by lightning - missed by five minutes being here for the action," Rosie wrote on the Northern NSW Severe Weather Facebook page.

"Campers describe the charge hitting the tree then travelling along the fence line 100m to where they were sitting causing sparks at the gate."

The chasers posted photos of the tree and the scorch marks clearly seen on the gate latch.
