Star Wars looking to set biggest opening weekend of all time

BANG Showbiz

STAR Wars: The Force Awakens hauled in an estimated $US250 million ($AUD348 million) at global movie box offices through to Friday and is on track to finish its opening weekend with record US and Canadian ticket sales.

The projections from Disney indicated the film could eclipse the $US208.8 million record set by dinosaur adventure film Jurassic World in June.

Disney said theatres were adding show times to meet "unprecedented demand".

Fans eager to see the first Star Wars movie in a decade came dressed as Stormtroopers or Jedi. Ticket sales on Thursday night and Friday surpassed previous records set by the final Harry Potter film in 2011.

The movie has opened in 44 countries outside North America, earning $US72.7 million in total through to Thursday.
