Standing up for the region

WARREGO MP Ann Leahy is urging landholders across southwest Queensland to join the fight against vegetation management law restrictions.

Ms Leahy is encouraging residents to sign and circulate a parliamentary petition she is sponsoring.

"The e-petition has only been out for two weeks and already 200 people per day are signing the petition,” she said.

"We all know that in the last parliament the State Labor Government introduced some of the worst anti-agriculture vegetation management reforms that landholders had seen in the last 20 years.

"Not only were landholders voicing their concern at the time, the Property Council of Australia also protested, saying it will directly affect the cost of housing in urban areas like Southeast Queensland.”

Ms Leahy said the parliamentary petition was an opportunity for landholders and the wider community to register their protest against Labor's policy to tighten vegetation management laws.

"Increasing restrictions on vegetation management flows through communities, impacting local businesses and housing affordability in urban areas,” Ms Leahy said.

"This was clearly evidenced in the productivity report that studied the impacts on the Murweh Shire,” Ms Leahy said.

"The Palaszczuk Labor Government's roll back of the LNP's workable and practical vegetation management framework will remove property rights, reduce the productivity of the agricultural sector and threaten jobs in our region.”

Ms Leahy said last term Labor's proposed amendments were more extensive and aggressive than simply overturning the LNP's 2013 changes.

On her visit to Roma last month, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk offered little respite, as she said Labor would honour its election commitment.

"Let's just make it very clear that everyone knows our election commitment and we are honouring those commitments,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

"And, of course, through the committee process there will be ample opportunity for people to have their say and we will not be bypassing that process.”
