Special dedication for Jack
IT'S not often that someone gets a song written about them but one Roma resident has been given that special honour.
Tamworth country musician Brendan Nawrocki has dedicated one of his tracks to 94-year-old Jack Knights.
Mr Nawrocki spent three years in Roma and developed a close bond with Mr Knights.
"I met Jack about six years ago now,” he said.
"I grab song ideas from everywhere and this particular one just seemed to stick with me.”
"I would see Jack driving through town in his old ute all the time and I'm a big fan of the particular ute that he has.”
The lyrics of the song titled "Hey Jack” revolve around Mr Knights' trips around town and him drinking his favourite beverage.
"I've been singing his song all over the country and I always tell the story of Jack before I sing the song,” Mr Nawrocki said.
"He would always be stopping at coffee shops and I'm a big fan of coffee and I used to bump in to Jack whenever I was in town.”
Mr Nawrocki said he had never originally planned to stay in Roma but he was glad that he had.
"It's a funny story because I was passing through Roma in 2011 as I was heading out to Alice Springs, well that's where I was planning on going anyway,” he said.
"I pulled up in Roma for coffee and they let me out three years later.”
While in Roma this week, Mr Nawrocki caught up with his old friend Mr Knights for a coffee at Roma Grind.
The musician played Mr Knights' song for him in front of the coffee shop audience, from which he received a roaring applause.
"It's definitely special to have someone write a song about you,” Mr Knights said.
"He's a very talented man and he just seems to be a natural at singing.”
"I'm doing a bunch of shows at caravan parks and I actually did one at the Big Rig caravan park,” Mr Nawrocki said. "It was a great little show and about 40 people showed up.”
Mr Nawrocki said he often returned to Roma and was hoping to play shows at some of the caravan parks.
