Klein urges firies to speak
A FORMER rural fire officer is urging primary producer brigades to submit their ideas to the Fire Service Review established by the State Government.
The government announced that Member for Mirani Ted Malone would head up a committee to look at the RFS after it ran into significant opposition on its controversial decision to axe officers and jobs were put on hold.
But Roma local Ray Klein said the volunteers in the primary producer brigades around Roma had different views to those looked after districts in urban areas.
"These PPBs are a group of people who act with the assistance of the Rural Fire Brigade to do what they would do anyway," Mr Klein said.
"That is, protect people and their assets from the ravages of wildfire."
Mr Klein said PPB volunteers didn't have the same requirement for formal training as the "urbans" do.
"Many of the skills required by country brigades are gained by hands on use of fire on their properties," he said.
Mr Klein questioned whether the government needed to have full-time training staff located in Roma.
"Primary Producer Brigades will go on with or without RFS assistance from Roma," he said.
"All they give PPBs is a deluge of useless and indeed wrong information on points of legislation regarding fire wardens."
Mr Klein said the RFS needed many changes in structure, function, leadership and culture.
"I would urge those landholders who are members of PPBs who have ideas how the Rural Fire Service can be improved to submit them to Mr Malone."
