South-West Country players make Outback selections
RUGBY LEAGUE: The efforts of South-West Country have paid off from the Outback Rugby League Carnival, with several key players from Roma and District being selected for the prestigious Outback A-grade team.
Matt Waites, Jarrod McIntosh, Zac Downey, Dan Dwyer, Clinton Taylor, Ashley Dyball and Les Wortley are among the 18 players selected to represent the Queensland Representatives Side for 2016, which includes players from the south, central and north-west rugby league teams.
A-grade coach David Kerrigan said the committee was greatly impressed by the performance of the boys at the carnival, and congratulated Mitchell and the Outback committee for their effort over the weekend.
Mr Kerrigan said this year’s selection was of a mix of both experienced players to back the side, and more youthful players to selected from the regions.
“Over the years we’ve worked hard to come up with the right mix of players, so there are those who have previously made the side that are back on, along with some of the more youthful ones,” he said.
“It’s about progression – you can’t keep selecting the same side, and we want to reward the players who deserve it.”
Mr Kerrigan further stated the players would use this selection as an opportunity to progress further with selections.
“We have very telling young players this year; they can use this as an opportunity for future selections with the Cowboys or Black Hawks,” he said.
“In future years we will have more mascots and Johnathan Thurstons coming through.”
Michael Purcell, Zachary Downey, and John Trindall were among some previously selected players.
