Slippery Cods bolt ahead
THE Roma Echidnas attempt to string together two wins in a row for the first time this season was unsuccessful after going down to Condamine at Gallas Fox Park on Saturday.
The Echidnas were unable to send departing captain Tom Capel off on a winning note after both grades went down to the Cods.
The clash was the last time Capel would pull on the blue and white after being transferred interstate for work.
In the A-grade clash, the Echidnas were on the back foot from the early minutes after bravely attempting to run the ball from their own line.
Condamine's pressure was too much for the fumbling Echidnas, who coughed up possession to let the Cods scoot to an early 7-0 lead.
But it wasn't long until the home side had one of its own on the board after skipper Tom Capel crossed for a five-pointer as a farewell present to his outgoing club.
The Cods put the heat on Roma for much of the first 40, but the Echidna's defence held strong.
The visitors had an opportunity to extend the lead by three points before half-time but didn't capitalise.
Condamine came out firing after oranges and it wasn't long until they added another seven points with a try next to the up-rights.
The Echidnas played with much more vigour in the second 40 but let the visitors cross for three unanswered tries, resulting in the 28-5 loss.
A-grade has a bye this coming round and B-grade plays against South Burnett at Gallas Fox Park.
There is a full competition bye the following weekend for the Queen's Birthday long-weekend, and the two weeks off for A-grade would be just what the doctor ordered.
The Echidnas have been struggling to field two separate teams this season, meaning key play-makers have been playing 160 minutes of footy every Saturday.
