THERE is no denying Lincoln McKinlay is a smooth talker, he has to be as one of Queensland's best young auctioneers.

The 20-year-old salesman has been paving out his career with TopX Roma and is one of eight national finalists competing for the Prosser Cup at the Sydney Royal Easter Show on March 26.

Mr McKinlay said the winner of the prestigious event would go on to represent Australia in the International Livestock Auctioneers' Competition at the Calgary Stampede in Canada.

"It would be unreal (to win), they take you over to Calgary and you sell for a week," he said.

"That's the dream."

Mr McKinlay said he had been working hard as the youngest auctioneer at the Roma Saleyards for the past three years.

He said he expected the national competition to require a more polished performance than day-to-day auctioneering.

The Australian Livestock and Property Agents judge competitors on their diction, values, voice, manner, as well as their presence and unique style.

Mr McKinlay said the most important attributes of a good auctioneer was to meet market values and achieve the best possible result for clients.

"Buyers are the hardest part of the job," he said.

"Making sure you're not letting the buyers give you the lowest price, that they're not pulling you down too much."

Mr McKinlay grew up at Pittsworth, about 40 minutes outside Toowoomba and began his career as fresh-faced high school graduate.

He said hard work and learning from more experienced auctioneers was the key to success.

"Practice, it's the same as anything, practice makes perfect," Mr McKinlay said.

Paul Dooley, chairman of the ALPA NSW Auctioneers Committee and the first winner of the ALPA Young Auctioneers Competition National Title, said it was a wonderful competition.

"The training and experience it provided me and so many young auctioneers over the last 25 years is invaluable," Mr Dooley said.

"I believe we owe those who started it a great deal of gratitude."
