THE shooting that took the lives of two men, Greg McNaughton and his son Tim, and left Lindsay Hart injured on Tuesday is being investigated as a murder-suicide by police.

Detective Inspector Darrin Shadlow spoke to media yesterday morning about the tragic incident that occurred on a property on Newells Rd, The Caves.

Det Insp Shadlow (pictured) said the three men were close friends who were target shooting that afternoon for about an hour before the incident about 4.40pm.

Speaking before the names of the men were released by the Royal Flying Doctor Service in the afternoon, Det Insp Shadlow said one of the men, understood to be Tim, 24, fatally shot another with a registered long arm rifle before attempting to shoot the second man and then turned the weapon on himself.

The events are not believed to be premeditated.

Mr Hart, 54, who fled the shooting, is recovering in Rockhampton Hospital.

"He did escape… he did receive a suspected gunshot wound to his arm and possibly another graze from a gunshot as well," Det Insp Shadlow said.

"He contacted police and they spoke with him at a neighbouring property.

"They were out on the property... it is approximately 50 acres."

The bodies of the deceased were located about 10pm.

"We still have forensic experts to look at the scene to paint a picture for the coroner," Det Insp Shadlow said.
