Shark advocate honoured for Healthy Land and Water award

MARINE naturalist Tony Isaacson has been honoured at the 2017 Healthy Land and Water Awards for his ongoing advocacy for sharks.

Isaacson said following the awards in Brisbane on Friday that his advocacy remained a work in progress to get a better deal for sharks than they receive as a consequence of what he sees as antiquated lethal control measures that belong in a museum.

He says sharks play an essential role in ensuring resilience through biodiversity in natural systems.

Mr Isaacson would like to see Australia follow the Bahamas which in 2011 declared all its sharks as protected as assets for the environment and a sustainable seafood export industry.

He has taught marine sciences for the past 40 years, also planting 20,000 trees for koala and wildlife corridors and winning the BHP Prize for Science Teaching.

Mr Isaacson is a powerful advocate for the non-lethal Clever Buoy technology to replace shark nets and baited hooks as control measures on Queensland beaches.
