Shakes takes honours on Roma Santos Race Day
WHILE Dunaden was an eye-catching Caulfield Cup winner in Melbourne on Saturday, there was enough interest on the Roma track to keep local racing punters happy.
All five races at Bassett Park were sponsored by Santos who also arranged for free entry to the track.
In race one, the Fairview Maiden plate, trainer Tracey Wolfgram was also a proud mother as 17-year-old son Travis stormed home on her runner Bullova Lady to beat the Craig Smith-trained Radford Lad by two and a half lengths and another Smith horse De Racer in third.
In race 2 We Have The Energy Class 1 Handicap, it was a quinella for another local trainer with Ben Waldron's What do you Want and Pure Sunset finishing first and second separated by just a neck ahead of a game The Robber who finished third.
Race 3 was the Santos Roma Class 3 handicap and Travis Wolfgram made it a double, riding Master Nick to victory by a neck from La Cloisonne and another Smith horse Captain Ladoni in third.
With direct entry to the Roma Cup and $6500 in prizemoney on offer, all eyes were trackside for the feature race of the day the Santos Open Handicap.
In a tight finish, Pat Webster's Shakes shook of the field to win by half a length over Lucky Duke and Courallie Star.
Shakes' victory was the first of two for Webster who also saddled up a winner in the final race of the day.
Cash in a Hurry, ridden by Leslie Tiley, won by a long neck from Guns and Night Warrior.
The stage is now set for the big meet of the year - the Roma Cup on Saturday, November 17.
