Seismologist says more earthquakes are expected

A SEISMOLOGIST says Fraser Coast residents can expect more quakes.

About 4.40am on Saturday a 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck 100km east of Fraser Island.

Geoscience Australia Duty Seismologist Marco Maldoni said the quake was barely felt by holiday makers and residents on Fraser Island.

"We have had only one report from Eurong," he said.

Mr Maldoni said the Boxing Day quake wasn't unusual for the area, it marks the 16th earthquake recorded since July this year.

"Today's earthquake is not out of character in the sense that it seems to fit into the pattern we have seen which is two main earthquakes followed by a series of small aftershocks."

"This behavior could go on for another few days, weeks or months."
