Search is on for old mayors
A WHOLE new side of Roma's past is being unveiled by a group of enthusiastic volunteers at the History Lodge.
To help celebrate 150 years of local government in Roma, a group of dedicated History Lodge members have been compiling photos and profiles of Roma's 44 mayors.
The data stretches back to 1867 when Thomas McEwen, from the Isle of Bute in Scotland, took on the role as first mayor of the newly declared town on the banks of the Bungil.
President of Roma's History Lodge Maree Worland said there was a wealth of information and interesting facts peppered throughout each mayor's story.
"James Saunders, the fifth mayor of Roma, was a chemist and his shop was on the corner of McDowall and Arthur Sts and it's been a chemist ever since, right up to present day,” Mrs Worland said.
"It's the longest-standing chemist shop in Queensland.”
The majority of the information has been painstakingly gleaned from records, history books, online databases and family collections.
Of the 44 mayors however, they only have photos of 41 of them.
James Buckenham (1939), Alfred Henry Roy (1946-51) and William Brady (1951-1952) are the three missing mayors.
"We're putting the call-out to see if anyone has any photos of these three mayors,” Mrs Worland said.
"They could have been friends or family members of someone's parents or grandparents, and it would mean so much if we could include their photos with the rest of them.”
If you have any photos of these mayors, please phone Maree Worland at the Roma History Lodge on 0422574897.
