Second alleged bag thief charged

POLICE have charged a second man allegedly involved in a Sunshine Coast bag-snatching racket after three months of evading capture.

Corey George Athman, also known as Bell, did not apply for bail when he fronted the Maroochydore Magistrates Court yesterday for unlawful use of a motor vehicle and four counts of robbery with violence.

Mr Athman, unemployed with no fixed place of abode, is accused of targeting female victims to steal their handbags in Mooloolaba and Buderim in August.

The 26-year-old's case was adjourned to the same day as his co-accused Soujurne Gipsy Grace, who allegedly drove the getaway car while Mr Athman snatched the bags.

Solicitor Chelsea Emery, from Ryan and Bosscher Lawyers, said she had made a submission to police regarding Mr Grace's charges and hoped for a response from police prosecutions in two weeks.

Mr Grace was wet from a dip in the Maroochy River when police captured him 15 minutes after the final bag snatch and was refused bail the following day.

Both men are charged with using a stolen car to rob a retired woman in a Buderim car park on August 15.

They allegedly robbed a 72-year-old Buderim woman walking with her husband along Brisbane Road at Mooloolaba at 2.30pm; a 75-year-old Tanawha retiree in Burnett Street at Buderim at 2.45pm; and then a Mooloolaba 45-year-old in Ocean Street at Mooloolaba loading the boot of her car at 3.30pm on August 16.
