Scammers target the Maranoa region

RESIDENTS are being advised to be cautious who to trust with their details as phone and online scams continue to rise across the Maranoa.

Locals have reported calls from individuals posing as representatives from businesses, including Westpac and Telstra, attempting to extort money.

A scam using Maranoa Regional Council and the name of a council officer also circulated, claiming to have a competition running whereby participants needed to pay to receive money.

A spokesperson from Maranoa Regional Council said no such plan was in operation from anyone within Maranoa Regional Council.

"Council is not presently conducting a competition whereby the participant needs to pay to receive money," she said.

"Residents in the Maranoa and beyond are encouraged to be extremely cautious when committing money over the phone."

Senior Sergeant Scott Jackson said Roma police were aware of several scamming attempts, but had not been inundated with calls.

"No official complaints have been lodged yet, but we are aware of the situation with several scams," he said.
