Runners-up are back to win

Rugby 7s: Brisbane Fijian Rugby may not have come out on top at last year's Santos Roma Rugby 7s but that's not stopping them from coming back with their eyes on the prize.

After a 19-0 loss in the final match at last year's Tanya Osbourne Cup, the team are hoping to reclaim the title they first took home in 2016, feeling strong after taking the Byron Bay 7s premiership in October.

Coach Rama Chand said returning to Roma was an opportunity for the team to play the game they loved.

"Fijians are natural 7s players, they love it and they say it's in their DNA,” Chand said.

"We come out to Roma to play good football but also to support the organisers - the Santos Echidnas have been really great in promoting rugby 7s and helping grow grassroots and rural rugby and we as a city-based team want to support that.

"We have a strong team, a few changes from the team who played in the Byron Bay tournament and different again from the Roma team last year, but I'd say we're up in the top three as favourite to win.”

Chand said their biggest competition would be last year's premiers UQ1 and Island Breeze, who took out the Central Coast 7s tournament.

"We have some really great players in our midst, some have played for the best 7s clubs in the world,” he said.

"We're looking forward to being out in Roma, we love the support of the community towards the game, we find regional clubs are very hospitable and they always make us feel really welcome. We like to play entertaining football and we're hoping the crowd enjoys the show we're going to put on.”

So far 14 men's and 10 women's teams have nominated in the February 2 tournament, to play for a share of a $18,000 prize pool.
