Ruby Rose: OITNB's new kid on the cell block
SHE has strutted both the red carpet and catwalk in designer gowns but now Ruby Rose's dream gig is only accessorised with an orange jumpsuit.
The Australian actress has joined the cast of the hit US show Orange is the New Black as Litchfield Prison's newest prisoner Stella Carlin.
The former MTV presenter and model says she was genuinely shocked to be offered the role of Stella.
"I am so stoked to be doing the show - it was literally my favourite show before this," she tells APN.
"I had been living in LA for two and a half years and hadn't had a lot of luck but I was letting people know I was here and wanting to work. I got the Orange audition and said if anything comes of this it would absolutely be my first priority."
Although she is the new girl on the cell block, Stella takes no time getting acquainted with her fellow prisoners, especially lead characters Piper (Taylor Schilling, pictured above with Rose) and Alex (Laura Prepon).
"I get myself into a bit of a love triangle and definitely ruffle some feathers," Rose says.
"She's androgynous and comfortable in her own skin. She's also charming and charismatic and she's Australian, which is really cool. I couldn't ask for a better character to play."
She joins fellow Australian Yael Stone, an original cast member who plays Italian-American inmate Lorna Morello.
The Lionsgate/Netflix original series has become wildly popular in both the US and Australia and Rose says it's clear to see why.
"I think the show has found a winning formula in what would have been a risk because women's prisons don't get spoken about a lot," she says.
"It covers so much - transgender, different kinds of genders, different sexes, races and ages - it encompasses every walk of life.
"It goes into their back stories and tells how they got themselves into these predicaments and sometimes it is the smallest thing and the smallest mistake."
So how would Rose deal with being thrown in among the likes of Red, Taystee, Nicky and Crazy Eyes?
"My experience as Stella is not entirely dissimilar to how I would approach my time," she says.
"But I would put my head down and try to fly under the radar, which is certainly not the case with Stella.
"And I would have to have Red smuggle in my puppy - you can't always trust people but you can trust puppies."
The third season of Orange is the New Black debuts on Netflix and Foxtel's Showcase channel today.
