Royal Commission to focus on Northern Territory

THE terms of reference for a royal commission into the Northern Territory youth detention system will be discussed in cabinet on Thursday, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Wednesday.

A royal commission into juvenile detention in the Northern Territory was announced after ABC's Four Corners this week showed footage of teenagers being abused.

There have been calls for the royal commission to extend further than the Northern Territory, including Queensland, but the Prime Minister said yesterday it would focus only on the territory's youth detention system. He said the most successful royal commissions had a clear focus.

Mr Turnbull said he hoped a directions hearing would be held next month with hearings to take place over the next few months and the final report to go to the government next year.
