Roma’s Ray Howson makes bid for council seat

BOOSTS to tourism, tidier towns and friendlier approach to business – these are some of the things Roma’s Ray Howson would look to bring in if he is elected in March.

Mr Howson, who is part of several community organisations and is an employee at Armstrong Motors, will make a bid for a seat on council when votes are decided on March 19.

The president of the Roma Tourism Association said one of his favourite industries would be a focus if he was elected, along with town beautification and waste management.

“Tourism is one of my favourite subjects – we’ve got new developments like motels and other businesses but we need to return the trust to people who have invested in us,” he said.

“We all know about the mayor’s plan to bring a dinosaurs to the region, but there is stuff we can in the interim like the site where the Minmi dinosaur was found.

“It gets Roma on the dino trail.”

Mr Howson said our towns’ entrances were in need of re-beautification, refuting Roma’s recent title as Queensland’s Tidiest Town.

“We don’t present tidy towns right now – the entrances really set the tone of a town but we look like an industrial estate based on what people see when they enter,” he said.

Mr Howson cited a lack of promptness around building and development approvals as an issue, saying the new council needed to be more “business-friendly.”

“I get feedback that development approval is slow; it’s costing the community, businesses and the council,” he said.

“We have got to be a business-friendly council.”
