Roma's Cities in a league of their own

Rugby 7s: League may be their forte but, for one day of the year, Roma's Cities boys will lace up their boots for a different game, and it's all in the name of supporting their town.

For the past three years, Cities have entered a team in the Santos Roma Rugby 7s, as a good excuse to get the boys back together again, and build a strong mutual respect with their rugby counterparts.

Cities' Dan Lucas said the appeal of the tournament was for the league team to build their fitness ahead of the upcoming season.

"They get to have a bit of a run around and get the ball back in their hands," Lucas said.

"We will look to be competitive, but we won't aim for the cup, it's of that high standard that big name Brisbane guys come out and play for, and it's good for our blokes to play against them."

"We were runners up to the played last year, and where we fell down was probably the rules, we have the skills, it's just difficult for some boys to go against their natural instinct to play league."

Lucas said the key differences between the two codes was speed and agility.

"It takes special strategies, techniques and skills to be good at 7s," Lucas said.

"You'll find that even good 7s players may not be as successful in the 15s competition, it's a game of it's own."

Above all, support for their town is what will bring the team to Gallas Fox oval on February 2.

"The last couple of years, the Echidna's have used our oval as a second home, which is a good thing for both of us," he said.

"It gives the rugby club a second oval to use, and it means we get to play some footy, get the ball back in our hands and have a good run around."

While Lucas said there would be a friendly nudge if Cities met the Echidna's in a scrum, it's all in good spirits.

"It's a really great community event for Roma, a lot of people come to town, and it's important to us to support that.

"We may not play for the same team, but we do play for the same town."
