Roma XI victorious

Cricket: Ensuring the year gets off on the right foot, Roma returned home from their away game in Charleville as the western division winners in the running for the Knox Shield.

In a great game of representative cricket, Romacaptain Scott Hilton started the game on theright note, winning thetoss and electing to bat first.

In the 45th over, Roma were bowled out for 212, with their top scorers doing their best to cement a victory early on.

R Carter was bowled out after 76 runs, Hilton scored 32 and J Packer came away with 30.

From the bowlers, Charleville's D Gasby had two wickets for 17 runs and C Haken two for 26.

Ready to make a strong reply, Charleville were allout for 158 in the 49th over.

S Wade made 51 runs and C Aitken 22.

Roma's bowlers did their best, with AJ Riley making three wickets for 24 runs and D Waldron two for 45.

Hilton said the team had played a great game of cricket.

"I'm very happy with how the team played, we didn't get to play any rep games last season due to washouts and forfeits so it's good to have a win,” he said.

Hilton said the win overCharleville had cemented their first place position in the western division of the Knox Shield, for which St George also plays.

"The team will now play the winner of the eastern division for the Knox Shield, which consists of Dalby, Chinchilla and Goondiwindi, of which Chinchilla are the defending champions,” he said.
