Roma Wife Carrying record gets broken
ALEX Underhill has already done the maths on how much beer he will take home after he and his partner Sophie Streets won Roma’s 2016 Wife Carrying Competition
The annual event pits teams of husbands and wives (or in this case partners) against each other for the chance to win the women’s weight in beer.
“I think it’s going to be about 130 cans,” Alex said.
Eight teams took part in Sunday’s event at the Bassett Park, for what has become a popular tradition for the Easter in the Country festival.
The man picks up the “wife” who hangs upside down while he runs through an obstacle course that features hay bales and miniature pools.
The quickest time wins, but it takes two to conquer the course.
If the couple is not in-sync, the woman can easily fall off throughout the course.
“Luckily she just grabbed on tight,” Mr Underhill said.
The Sunshine Coast couple not only won on the day, but also broke the all time record for the event with a 51 second run.
Although the couple both earned the victory, it will be Alex that savours it as Sophie is not a beer drinker.
