Roma to get own version of Eat Street

ROMA is getting its very own version of Eat Street with the introduction of Food Truck Fridays.

From June, the Big Rig will host a collection of local food vendors.

It's an initiative driven by Bessie's Ice Cream Bus owner Amber Davis, who said she wanted to introduce a different event for Maranoa foodies.

Local favourites including Royal Indian Kitchen and Cafe 54 will be involved as well other speciality food vans from outside the region.

"It's something I've been working on since the end of December or early January,” Ms Davis said.

"It's an opportunity for food vendors to try different stuff and specials and, possibly, add that to their everyday menus.

"We're hoping to make it family friendly, so now we have approval, we have to go and talk to community groups about getting the train to run longer, get some kids' activities happening, and also scheduling some entertainment, so there's something different every month.”

Tourism portfolio councillor Puddy Chandler told The Western Star although council was "going out on a limb” supporting the Food Truck Fridays initiative, she hoped the community followed through on initial messages of support.

"I had never heard of the concept before but I know it happens in other places and other towns do it,” Cr Chandler said.

"We're not the first but it will be one of those things where we see how we go.

"We might get all the food trucks turn up and not have any patrons, so we'll see.”

Cr Chandler said she hoped the event would also help drive customers to the Big Rig's existing food venue, Roma Thai.

"Hopefully it will be a win-win for both,” she said.

"We really want to promote that area, and as part of our plans for making that a bigger and better area this is a great step.

"It will be targeted more to our locals.”

Food Truck Fridays will operate on Friday nights, 5-8pm in spring, but on Saturdays, from 4-7pm in winter.
