Roma Speedway go ‘back to basics’ with monthly meets

RENEE Waugh has been called ‘lead-footed’ by her friends, such is her love for speedway racing.

That’s why she is determined to see the return of Roma Speedway, which will now hold race meets every third Saturday of every month.

Waugh, whose whole family is involved in the sport, said she wanted to see speedway action in Romareturn to its glory days.

“We want to create some interest in speedway to provide the Maranoa with some choice for spectator sports,” she said, speaking trackside on Saturday night.

“If your kids come, the parents come as well.

“I’d like to get the whole community involved in it.”

The club has only held one meet a year for the past few seasons, with its Easter in the Country meet always drawing a large crowd.

But the vice-president of Roma Speedway said they were heading back to basics with their approach rather than going for massive spectacles.

“The club went too big and money needed made it too expensive to run regularly,” she said.
