Roma SES puts out call to arms for volunteers
THEY are the heroes you probably never think about until something goes very wrong.
Now, with storm season just around the corner, Roma SES is struggling to fill its ranks.
In fact, local controller Bryce Duke said it had been two years since a new volunteer had come on board.
"Ninety per cent of our time is sitting around waiting for things to happen but when it happens it's all hands on deck,” Mr Duke said.
"The more people we have, the bigger the pool we can draw from.”
Mr Duke said he understood people were time poor and volunteering could seem like a big ask.
But he said many of the SES volunteers fit their work around their full-time jobs.
"Everyone is time poor,” he said.
"Every emergency service struggles with that.
"People aren't obligated to turn up for every single thing. We're more than flexible to work within their schedule.
"There are very understanding employers in town.
"If something happens, employers are very flexible.”
Mr Duke said not all SES volunteers had to get involved in field work as there were a range of roles required.
"We can have them involved in anything they want,” he said.
"We do traffic control and storm recovery, clearing trees, but also command centre work, so people can get involved in admin.”
