Roma Saleyards fat sales to continue on a fortnightly basis

DIRE weather conditions continue to take its toll on fat cattle and with no end in sight, Roma Saleyards prime sales will continue on a fortnightly basis.

From Thursday, July 4, prime sales will be held on a fortnightly basis until Monday, September 30, as per request from the Roma Livestock Agents Association.

Maranoa Regional Council originally approved the change in April due to a reflection of the current conditions throughout the region and numbers of prime (fat) cattle halving in the past 12 months.

Saleyeards councillor Peter Flynn said fortnightly sales had continued as it was highlighted in an advisory meeting with the RLAA.

"Obviously the numbers of fat cattle are having problems due to the drought that is continuing in the western parts of Queensland,” he said.

"The change has been cost-efficient for the saleyard users.

"Having a sale with a small amount of cattle involved is not very cost-effective for all the service providers involved, whether they be staff movement contractors, saleyard operators or vendors and agents who are selling their cattle.

"It is not an ideal situation, but the numbers in the store cattle market are holding up, so our Tuesday sales are still as strong as ever.”

The application to renew the continuation of fortnightly sales or going back to weekly sales will be reviewed by the RLAA prior to September 30.
