Roma Pony Club riders star at State Championships
PONY CLUB: Roma's young pony club stars have come away with a score of ribbons and awards from the Queensland Pony Club Championships in Oakey.
The four-day event, which tested riders on dressage, show-jumping, campdrafting, barrel racing and Mounted Games, turned into a major achievement for Roma's riders.
Every participant came away with no less than two ribbons and Peter Green won his age group for the Sporting category of the event.
Roma Pony Club publicity officer Gaylene Stanford said along with tough competition, the young riders had plenty of fun over the long weekend.
"Every rider in our club got at least two ribbons. They had a lot of fun," she said.
"Peter Green ended up winning his age group for the Sporting category, and earned a maroon horse rug.
"The Mounted Games (on the final day), that's like the relay at the end of the athletics carnival.
"It's a team thing and that's where there's a lot of laughter and fun to be had."
But the championships are no laughing matter, with riders required to pre-qualify before they could be selected to compete against the 300 participants from across Queensland.
"You've got to compete in your local days to get your times good enough to qualify," Ms Stanford said.
"They had to do some of the local shield days and our local instructor had to give them the all-clear and sign the form."
The club will hold the annual Corfe Shield event on October 22.
