Roma man Craig McKnight needs your help
DEEP down, Roma's Craig McKnight is like any other 25-year-old - he loves movies, his parents and his dogs. He's got an obsession with Star Wars, Thunderbirds and Minecraft.
In fact, the only difference between him and this writer is that Craig has cerebral palsy. And he needs your help.
His parents Leonie and Graham have helped him set up a GoFundMe campaign so the family can purchase a wheelchair-accessible vehicle so they can travel to Brisbane for specialist visits and to visit family.
Having lost the ability to walk at two and with no ability to speak, Craig is confined to a wheelchair and needs 24-hour assistance.
His cerebral palsy has been further complicated by a certain type of Leighs Syndrome, a severe neurological disorder characterised by the progressive loss of mental and movement abilities.
However, as his mother Leonie attests, Craig has full mental capacity and a rich emotional intelligence.
"He's an exquisite communicator - he has an amazing sense of humour, he's empathetic and has a strong moral sense,” she said.
Leonie, who was told by doctors her son would not live past two, said a special vehicle would greatly improve Craig's quality of life.
"Right now, the only way to go to appointments is using a taxi or the Anglicare bus,” she said.
"It would let us experience movies that are wheelchair accessible; we have friends on properties and he loves animals so it would mean we can go out there.
"It would add a lot to his quality of life, and ours as well.
"We've been loath to ask for help, but as it turns out the end of September is the cut-off for funding to purchase accessible vehicles.”
The GoFundMe campaign has already raised more than $3090 - to donate, go to www.gofundme.com/craigmck.
