Roma make twelve runs off final delivery to win cricket comp
CRICKET: Roma's cricket team has made 12 runs off the last ball to win the Toowoomba Last Man Standing Cup, something no cricketers have ever done in the tournament's history.
The eight cricketers who filled the squad are also the first team to win the Cup from further west than Toowoomba.
The LMS Cup was played over the weekend and had 12 A-Grade cricket teams from Brisbane, Ipswich, Toowoomba and further out west playing in a knock-out round robin 20/20 modified tournament in a bid for some silverware and $1000 prizemoney.
Roma captain Scott McDonald said the team played three matches but it was the final against Toowoomba's number one- ranked side where the magic happened.
Big hitter Scott Pearson stepped up to the crease, belting 93 runs not out off 41 balls to chase down 195 runs to win the championship.
But it was the last ball of the game that blew away the whole crowd.
Roma needed 12 runs to win the game and due to the modified rules, the last ball of the game counted as double the number of runs.
So Pearson did what he does best, belting the ball out of the park for six and sealing the victory for the Roma boys.
McDonald said the boys were ecstatic with the win.
"It was the first time we played that format of cricket, so we had no game plan and we just took everything in our stride and took each game as it came,” he said.
"It was fantastic to get the win, it was great for the Roma boys to compete against players at that level and calibre, let alone beat them.
"Scott is one of the best batsmen out in the west and he sure proved that with the last ball.”
Roma will now head to the Winners Tournament in July and the Australian Championships in September.
