Roma gun club has national tournament in its sights
SHOOTING: Three members of the Roma Clay Target Club are off to Wagga Wagga, in New South Wales, to represent Queensland at the National Clay Target Competition in two weeks.
Richard Morrison will captain the five-person open team while Brodie Hewitt, 17, and Max Johnston, 16, will make up two-thirds of the junior team.
The members earned their places in the respective teams when they battled it out and were selected from more than 320 nominated shooters at the Queensland State Title Shoot at the beginning of the year.
Morrison has represented the state in clay target shooting once before in 2009 but for the junior team members it will be their first time stepping up to the plate.
Brodie, who has been shooting since 2012, said he was excited to be chosen for the junior team because at the age of 17 it was his last opportunity before he started competing at the open level.
Max has been shooting since 2013.
The contestants stand 15m from the trap house where the clay targets are propelled about 50m into theair from an oscillating trap.
Australian Clay Target Association president Robert Nugent said the targets travelled at about 70kmh.
The National Clay Target Competition was last held in Roma in 2009, which saw some 640 competitors descend on the club for the week-long event.
It will return to the region again in 2019.
