Roma fun day lives up to name

THE ROMA Fun day lived up to its name on Saturday morning, bringing a festive atmosphere for hundreds of families visiting Bassett Park.

Organised by Sarah Stone and Marc Benson, the day aimed to raise much needed funds for well-known children's charity Ronald McDonald House.

Walking through the front gates, it was hard to escape the smell of freshly cooked food and the many market stalls that neatly skirted the Roma showgrounds.

By opening time of 10am, locals and visitors were flooding through the front gates to get a head start on the crowds which came later in the morning.

Ms Stone said the day had something for everyone and was a great way to give back to the community in the Maranoa while contributing to a good cause.

"Today we've got a wide range of markets, a petting zoo, lots of food stalls and then we'll have live entertainment with Travis Holland,” she said.

"We've also got face painting, the Surat Aboriginal Corporation has come on to do artwork with the kids by making didgeridoos and other items.

"The Queensland Fire Service has also got on board and has brought their little kids' fire truck as well, so there's definitely lots to keep everyone occupied with lots of prizes to win and games to play.”

The idea of the Roma Fun Day come to fruition when Sarah wanted to raise a little bit of money for the Ronald McDonald House centre in Brisbane but it has since grown into something bigger.

"Originally when I started this venture, we just wanted to raise some money for the playground in Brisbane,” she said.

"Now, because everyone has been so generous and kind, we've been able to go above that and the money we'll raise will go towards keeping the doors open at the centre.”

All donations from the day went to the Ronald McDonald house southeast Queensland, with more than $10,000 raised, thanks to the valuable donations from visitors and businesses and government services which participated on the day.
