Roma Cup increases tickets after surge in demand from public

AFTER the announcement that the largest calendar event in the southwest will go ahead after months of uncertainty – it is now confirmed even more punters will be able to enjoy the Roma Cup than originally anticipated.

Vice President of the Roma Turf Club, Peter Flynn revealed that 2000 people will now be able to have a punt, compared to the 1500 that was originally allowed.

However, 250 of those spots will be allocated to owners, trainers, jockeys and staff so 1750 tickets will be available to the general public.

Mr Flynn said the club sold 750 bookings in less than three days.

Close to $150,000 worth of prize money is up for grabs, with the Roma Cup race worth $35,000.

Mr Flynn said the Roma Cup race is the last qualifying event before the races in Brisbane in early December.

The vice president said the club will follow the COVID Safe plan from Queensland Health and Queensland Racing.

“We will have strict social distancing, there won’t be any large marquees like previous years but the space is big enough for people to spread out,” Mr Flynn said.

“We will have one marquee near the bar area.

“And we will use the grandstand and pop up tents.

“Fashions on the field will still go ahead, but at a limited number due to social distancing.”

He said that unfortunately the Turf Club won’t be allowing anyone to camp after the event which is a positive for motels in town.

“This would be good for the local business community because everyone travelling to the event will stay at a local motel,” he said.

“We also won’t be able to provide entertainment after the function so anyone who leaves the races will be spending dollars in town.”
