Roma boys following in dad's footsteps

ENGINEER Kevin Chambers never intended for his boys Ryan and Casey to follow him down the same career path - but he's proud they have.

The Eng One owner has watched his sons with great interest while they took part in the F1 in Schools program at Roma State College this year.

While Casey's team raced in the cadet class at the state finals, Ryan has been developing his skills in the beginner class where they only use paper cars.

Mr Chambers, who helped judge the teams in the regional finals earlier this year due to his job, said he never pushed Casey or Ryan to consider becoming engineers.

"It is very nice to see - even without encouraging them, they've taken it on board themselves,” he said.

"I initially stayed out and told them that I could come in and drive it, but I let them do it and see how they went.

"It's now gotten to the point where they're asking me for help, so I am happy to do that.”

Mr Chambers said the judging of the regional finals required him to ensure the cars were within specifications.

"With my engineering background and most of my boys doing it, the teachers started to understand I had that background and was in a position to help,” he said.

"They asked me if I'd be keen to help with the adjudicating for the finals in Roma.

"There were a full set of specifications they were judged against - each specific vehicle's weights and measurements were taken.

"Any section that was out of the specifications were given a time or point penalty or a disqualification.”

While some kids might not want to follow in their parents' career paths, Ryan said he was enjoying the chance.

"I'm really happy about doing the same stuff as him,” he said.
