Roma bowls players victorious at Maranoa/Warrego Championships

BOWLS: Roma bowls club players Melissa Caletti and Robert Hammond have come out triumphant at the Maranoa/Warrego Men's and Women's Singles Champions.

Melissa and Robert were the champions in their respective divisions of the competition.

Melissa won the Women's Singles with an impressive score of 26-3 and Robert won the Men's 25-6.

"The weather was cold, windy and rainy during the competition, it was terrible,” Melissa said.

"So the competition was all over in hour.

"Robbie won his game as well and he played brilliantly.”

Overall the competition was a major success for the Roma Bowls Club, with players Trish Ferguson and Patricia Kiely winners of the Ladies Pairs round.

"The girls both did really well, we call them the TNT,” Melissa said.

Robert also took out the Men's Pairs round, winning with the last shot.

"They drew the pairs and so had to play an extra round at the end,” Melissa said.

"Robbie took the last shot and won, it was a really good game to watch.”

Melissa will now go on to the play at the Zone championship against Downs, Southern Downs and Condamine at the end of August.

"I've been practising and I've a got a coach, Greg Johen, who I train with every week.”

Melissa said it would be great to see some more ladies get involved with the sport.

"It's more of a mental challenge than a physical one,” she said.

"It's a great sport to play.”
