BASKETBALL: You won’t find many young athletes as dedicated as Sam Boon.

The 19-year-old has returned from the United States after completing a basketball scholarship, where he got the opportunity to train with other aspiring basketball players.

“I was playing in the NJCAA, which is the National Junior College Athletic Association, so I was travelling between Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming and all around that area playing against other colleges,” Sam said.

“I played against a few NBA players’ brothers and a lot of Division 1 players who would eventually go pro.”

Basketball is followed religiously in America and Sam was able to experience first-hand just how much they value the sport and those who play it.

“Everywhere when you go down the street if they just see that your a basketball player, like little kids would run up and want to talk to you,” he said.

“The town was really supportive of us, they would always invite us over for team dinners so it was really good.”

Sam came back from the US in May and now has his sights set on a contract as a development player in the National Basketball League (NBL).

“I’m hoping to try and go semi pro or try and get a contract as a player in the NBL,” Sam said.

“I’ve gained a bit of interest from a few semi pro teams around Queensland so I’m just hoping once I’m done with rehab I can go and have a look at the teams and see what’s best for me.”

A minor set back in his career, Sam is recovering from an injury after he tore ligaments and broke bones in his ankle.

“I’ve just started rehab this week but I should be back in to it soon.”

In his final years of schooling, Sam sacrificed his social life to concentrate on the game and his dedication is already paying off.

“I’d go to school, got to work and go to the gym and train and I did that for a whole two years,” he said.

“So I didn’t really do much other than play basketball but it’s been worth it.”
