Robber who tried to 'borrow' phone jailed

A FORMER Toowoomba resident's bungled Southbank robbery attempt has seen him jailed.

Aaron Samuel Sesay, 21, pleaded guilty to a violent attempted robbery in Brisbane's Southbank Parklands.

Sesay, a Sierra Leonean immigrant, settled in and went to school in Toowoomba after leaving the war-torn nation.

The Brisbane District Court heard in July last year Sesay was walking through the park at night when he approached another man.

He asked the man if he could use his phone to make a call which the man refused.

After attempting to convince the man, Sesay eventually attacked him - grabbing the man around the neck and choking him.

However, the man eventually broke free and escaped. Sesay, who was on parole, was arrested and returned to prison.

He has already served 10 months in prison because of the offence.

Judge Michael Burnett said Sesay had a history of committing dishonest crimes - but did not believe he was a lost cause yet.

He said Sesay had been a promising student and had given away furthering his education when he fell in with "unsociable people".

"I accept to some extent you are a young man who has lost his way," he said.

"It is not too late for you, but you are approaching a time when your character will be set."

Sesay was sentenced to 12 months prison, which will be added to the sentence he is currently serving. He will be eligible for parole in July.
