Robber recognised by customer, staff member

A GLASS House Mountains man was recognised by a staff member and a customer when he robbed his local bottle shop armed with a syringe.

Brendan Alan Gaffney, 31, made a rushed decision to rob the Glasshouse Cellars shortly before 6pm on May 30 2015 to get money to cover a drug debt.

Maroochydore District Court on Monday heard Gaffney had not slept for about two weeks before he made the decision to fill a syringe with soft drink and rob the store.

Crown senior legal officer Lara Soldi said a staff member noticed him lingering in a section of the shop.

After a brief interaction Gaffney made his way to the front counter where a 16-year-old boy was working on the cash register.

Ms Soldi said Gaffney told the boy he was robbing the store.

The boy initially asked Gaffney if he was serious to which he replied he was.

Two customers then entered the store, one of whom recognised Gaffney as they had gone to school together.

Meanwhile, the staff member had seen Gaffney was holding a syringe filled with dark liquid by his side and told the teenager to do whatever he was told.

The court heard that staff member had also recognised Gaffney as he was a regular customer of the store.

Gaffney took about $1250 and fled, only to be caught at a home about an hour later.

Gaffney was also sentenced for stealing tools valued about $3100 from Sunshine Coast Council vehicles at Landsborough in the month leading up to the robbery as well as possessing six counterfeit $50 notes when stopped by police in Caboolture in March last year.

The court heard Gaffney had abstained from illicit drug use during the past 11 months in prison and he had become "a different person" as a result.

Judge Leanne Clare said Gaffney's addiction to ice had brought him to "rock bottom".

He was sentenced to three years in prison to be released on parole on September 3.
