RIO 2016: Hockeyroos defeat Argentina

HOCKEY: Emily Smith's goal early in the third quarter has helped the Hockeyroos move closer to a quarter-final berth after a 1-0 defeat of world No.2 Argentina.

The Australian women's win takes them up to six points in Pool B and up to third spot.

USA and Great Britain are tied on nine points, while Argentina lies fourth on three points with one just game remaining before the finals.

The top four from each of the two pools move through to the last eight.Smith's goal at the Olympic Hockey Stadium in Deodoro proved the difference.

She showed great control to palm the ball down before rifling home.

Great goalkeeping from Rachael Lynch kept the match scoreless in an exciting first half.

The Hockeyroos' final pool game is against Japan on Sunday morning.
