RIO 2016: Boomers wait for last-eight opponent

BASKETBALL: Australia will have to wait another 24 hours to learn who they will play in the quarter-final crossover round after completing its final Group A game with a 81-56 win over Venezuela in Rio.

The Boomers finished second behind the powerful USA in their pool with four big wins and an eight point loss to the Americans who scraped home 100-97 against France in the final game.

Every team in Group B, including underdogs Nigeria, can advance to the quarter finals so the Boomers will be watching with great interest for their next opponent.

Australia will not know their next opponent until after tomorrow's final Group B games with all six teams still in contention to finish first or second, including underdogs Nigeria.

With Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis sitting out his gun guard Patty Mills and restricting the minutes of both key big man Andrew Bogut and Matthew Dellavedova the Boomers denied a desperate Venezuela a place in the quarters with a 25 point victory.

Chris Goulding stepped up into the playmaking role for Mills and displayed his offensive skills, topping all scorers with 22 points.

The Boomers smashed their rivals on the boards, winning the rebounding battle 45-25 led by Ryan Broekhoff who ripped down eight.

The only downside for the Boomers was an injury to Cameron Bairstow.

Bairstow appeared in pain as he left the court halfway through the third quater with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.
