Residents show off art
A unique art exhibition showcasing the creative work of residents at the Westhaven Aged Care Facility will be held in Roma from mid-July.
The exhibition will be held at the Walk of Art - Roma on Bungil Art Gallery in Hawthorne St from 13 July until 10 August.
The exhibition is being supported by the art gallery, the South West Hospital and Health Service and Maranoa Regional Council.
A grand opening of the exhibition will be held at the gallery from 5.30 pm on 13 July, with light refreshments available.
Westhaven Recreation Officer Trish Jamieson said the art exhibition offered a unique insight into how residents saw the world.
"It's an expression of how they feel in the moment,” she said.
As a second-generation diversional therapist, following in the footsteps of her mother, Ms Jamieson is a passionate advocate of the various benefits complementary therapies like art can provide for older adults.
"Diversional therapy and aged care facilities have come a long way and now we are able to implement initiatives that make aged care facilities seem much more like home,'' she said.
"There is extensive scientific research supporting the benefits of artwork, music therapy, animal assisted therapy, cookery and even aromatherapy to reduce pain and depression and improve sleep amongst the elderly.”
