Residents fire up over garbage collector’s bin note
WHEN Bec Whyte walked out to the kerb on Bowen St to collect her wheelie bin on Tuesday, she was angry to find the collectors had not taken all her trash.
Instead, they left her a note on her lid.
Ms Whyte is one of hundreds of Roma residents left perplexed and angered by garbage collectors seemingly deciding not to take rubbish if it doesn't all fit in the bin.
"The bin went out, and there was a little bit over the top and I woke up to find the bag of rubbish [that had been protruding out] behind the bin," she said.
"It had a sticker with a form inside on top of it, but there was nothing inside it."
Ms Whyte said the decision to crack down on over-filled bins had not been notified by the Maranoa Regional Council.
"They've gone out of the truck and left it there," she said.
"Dogs and cats could've gotten into it and it would've spread rubbish across the sidewalk, which would've been my job to clean up.
"I haven't received any letters from the council saying there were new rules enforced.
"We pay for the rubbish in our rates and they've got to nerve to put it on the side of the road."
Plenty of angry residents have taken to Facebook to complain about the practice, with some less lucky than Ms Whyte.
"Happened to me last week. What a joke, I was furious as dogs then got into it when I was at work and was scattered everywhere," wrote user Tammy.
"We have one bin for everything for a whole week. How can they expect everyone's to be shut," wrote Tash.
"They need to take into account that we don't have a recycling bin so therefore we must try and fit it all in."
New Maranoa mayor Tyson Golder has personally apologised for people's rubbish being left behind, and said he would be working with the contractor to figure out a solution.
"I'd like to apologise for the rubbish being left behind and that if anybody has problems with it and if there are still some problems, feel free to talk to me," he said.
"I'll be talking to the contractors to see if we can't work out a solution.
"There's apparently no change in council policy so we'll have to find out what is happening here."
