Remembering our fallen
POLICE Remembrance Day came to Roma on Friday, with officers, staff, friends and family paying tribute to those who have fallen while serving in their line of duty.
Acting Inspector Patrick O'Loughlin said the morning was a great way to honour those in the service made the ultimate sacrifice.
"It's always pleasing to see days like these when the community can come together,” Insp O'Loughlan said.
"The ultimate sacrifice any person can make is to give their life in the performance of their duty and I think that cannot be understated.”
The day had extra meaning, after Constable Peter McAulay, 24, was hit in Ipswich on Thursday, as he set up road spikes attempting to stop an alleged stolen vehicle.
"The recent tragedy that has occurred with Peter McAulay underpins the real risks associated with the job when we serve the community,” Insp O'Loughlan said.
"The very real risks for our staff members is something which always exists in our line of work in the service.”.”
Mr O'Loughlin said safety always came first when protecting the community.
"We have to ensure that when we're doing our job that it is not only keeping ourselves safe but more importantly, our community members.”
