Refugees tell their stories to Roma and Surat students

THREE refugees from South Sudan, Chad and Afghanistan travelled the Maranoa this week to break down stereotypes and eliminate racism.

Magret Ateny, Prudence Melom and Habib Aliahmadi told Roma and Surat students of how they came to Australia and their journeys where they survived civil war, refugee camps and the Taliban.

For many students it was their first time meeting or talking to a refugee, an experience Ms Melom said would drive the point home. "The students have been listening to our stories and learning about where refugees come from and why they come here," she said. Roma State College Year 10 student Molly Cook said hearing the trio's stories made her appreciate life in Australia. "You realise how easy it is here in Australia when you hear their stories," she said.

Classmates Cassie Allen and Serena Sharpe said it opened their eyes to what was going on in the world.

To read the stories of the refugees who visited Roma State College and Surat State School, pick up a copy of the February 13 edition of the Western Star.
