Refugee on life support after emergency C-section on Nauru

A REFUGEE from Somalia was reportedly given only Panadol during an emergency C-section on the island of Naura.

The ABC reports the 22-year-old woman and her newborn son were transported to Brisbane in critical condition.

The Refugee Action Collective's Ian Rintoul told ABS the woman, known as Naima, were flown in separate planes to Brisbane.

Doctors for Refugees's Dr Barri Phatarfod also told the ABC the mother was on life support.

The incident comes in the same week a man fleeing Bangladesh for Australia because of homophobia died in a Nauru hospital.

He had taken an overdose of tablets and suffered a heart attack.

Both cases have raised questions about the care of asylum seekers who need more advanced medical treatment than Naura can provide.
