Queensland woman wins US lottery

A lucky Redland resident has been given the surprise of her life, winning division 3 of the US Power Lotto.

The 38-year-old woman has been working from home for the past few months and was ecstatic to learn she would receive $42,600.

The Lottery Office chief executive Jaclyn Wood said the Redland woman had ignored text messages from the provider to check the app and screamed in shock when the win was confirmed over the phone.

"She was ecstatic, just yelling and screaming when we informed her of the amount she is receiving," Ms Wood said.

"We could hear her poor husband in the background asking what was going on - I think we gave him quite a scare because he didn't know if it was good news or bad."

The woman is a regular player with The Lottery Office and usually checks the app religiously but hadn't looked at the winning numbers before her call on Sunday.

"I'm in the process of selling my house and I was planning to use whatever profit I made to buy a boat; my plans haven't changed but I'll be budgeting for a much bigger boat now," she said.

The woman was close to being the sole division 1 or 2 winner with her numbers 15, 21, 27, 47, 49, (7) narrowly missing the winning numbers 15, 21, 22, 27, 47 (7).

She advised she has been working from home full-time since the start of the pandemic and thought the home office was good practice for retirement.

"If I had won the full jackpot I would have retired and bought everything and anything that struck my fancy - so maybe it's for the best I got division 3."

With no division 1 or 2 winners, the US Power Lotto jackpotted to $117 million.

When Australians purchase tickets in its lotteries, The Lottery Office purchases a matching ticket in the overseas draw to give local punters the chance to win big.

The Lottery Office has several massive jackpots including the USA Mega Lotto valued at $149 million and the tax-free European lotteries including European Millions Superdraw at $212 million and European Jackpot at $34 million.
