Red Bulls take junior title

RUGBY LEAGUE: Wallumbilla/Surat Red Bulls took out the 16s final on Sunday, capping off a remarkable season littered with success.

In the 16s, the Red Bulls edged the Cities 24-22 with dummy-half Dylan Ogden kicking the winning penalty goal with seconds to spare in which some are describing as the game of the season.

For the Red Bulls coach Tim Klaas, the victory was made even more remarkable given the Red Bulls began the season with only a handful of players and no coach.

"We had maybe, four players at the start so each of them had to see if they had any mates who could come along and make up the numbers,” he said.

"This meant we had a lot of green players who hadn't played much footy - but they improved with each game.”

10-nil down at the break, the Red Bulls were struggling to match the energy and enthusiasm of the Cities players, but a new-found vigour in the second half led to an epic fightback, according to Tim.

"While we lacked intensity in the first half, the players stuck to their game plan of throwing three or four forwards down the short side to open up the gaps,” he said.

"Once we did that, the gaps began to open up which led to two quick tries.”

Once the final kick was sent sailing through the uprights, the team was able to reflect on what they had accomplished.

"Winning was really exciting. I was very proud of the boys and maybe a little relieved having beaten Cities previously,” Tim said.
