A PARFAIT designed to revive the popularity of The Big Pineapple's dessert glory days will be built on a world record scale in Mooloolaba today.
Sweet Lips Creamery owner Devon Howie said layered creations of fruit salad, pineapple, gelato, ice cream, jelly and cake had been popular since he and his wife Terri opened their store on The Esplanade late last month.
A champagne flute about 1m high will be filled with sweet ingredients this afternoon to claim an official Guinness World Record for the biggest parfait on the planet.
Customers and followers of the store's Facebook page will then be in the running to win the dessert, expected to require two people to carry, let alone eat.
Mr Howie said Guinness had confirmed there were no previous parfait records.
"I just wanted to create something different and make the Sunshine Coast have something special," Mr Howie said.
"It's just a fun thing.
There have already been orders from customers willing to buy their own massive parfait.
Mr Howie said he would build them for customers but needed orders days in advance because of the lengthy preparation time.
He said he would base his regular parfaits on the style of those for which the Big Pineapple was renowned during the 1970s and 1980s.
"It is bringing back the nostalgia of the Big Pineapple days."
The giant parfait construction will begin at 1.45pm and will be done by 2pm, when the winner will be announced.
