Reaching new heights

RUGBY LEAGUE: The Roma and District Junior Rugby League U12's team are coming off a successful trip to Murgon at the weekend, recording three wins from six games.

Roma pushed eventual winners Toowoomba, eventually going down 18 - 8 despite a courageous second half comeback.

The squad consisting of players from towns such as Mitchell, Charleville, Augathella, Cunnamulla and Mungindi came together to represent the might of junior southwest rugby league.

Coach Tony Knight said he was proud of the way his team performed, especially against clubs coming from larger cities.

"We came up against some pretty good sides including Toowoomba and District, you can imagine the area to pick from with that team, so our boys did really well,” he said.

With the players making the step up to the U13's next year, the carnival was played under international rules, to help juniors become accustomed to the new style of play.

One such rule change is the introduction of scrums, which took a little bit of getting used to, according to Tony.

"There was a little bit of confusion at first with a few legs in the wrong way but by the end of the weekend it was all good,' he said.

With St George district being introduced into the Roma junior ranks this year, two players from Mungindi - Tommy Tootall and Hamish Ramsay - also played starring roles in the side.

"They all fitted in well and and the other boys looked after them for the whole carnival,” Mr Knight said.
