‘Quick way to go back to prison’: Repeat offender warned

A YOUNG woman was warned that she will go back to prison if she continues to drive while disqualified.

Jennifer Joanne Coles was slapped with a $1500 fine and will be off the roads for two years after she pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle without a driver’s licence disqualified by court order in the Roma Magistrates Court on Tuesday, November 24.

The court heard police intercepted Coles on October 28 on the Carnarvon Highway and discovered her licence had been disqualified.

Police prosecutor sergeant David Longhurst said the defendant has three pages of traffic history.

“This is a quick way to go back to prison if she continually disregards the law,” he said.

The defendant’s lawyer, Laurie Parker said his client had a friend stuck in Roma with her manual car that she couldn’t drive so went to go pick her up.

“I’ve explained to Miss Coles the gravity of this matter,” he said.

Magistrate Peter Saggers repeatedly asked the defendant if she understood she cannot drive.

“Do you understand you cannot drive,” he asked.

“For any reason … any reason at all … do not get behind the wheel.

“As the prosecution says, if you continue to drive and court tells you ‘no’, the penalties become tougher and tougher.”

Coles was fined $1500, disqualified from driving for two years and the conviction was recorded.
