Quakes rattle New Zealand, more to come

PEOPLE in the lower North Island of New Zealand could be in line for more shakes this morning after a series of quakes rattled the region.

A strong 5.2 quake has struck near Masterton.

The quake was felt across the lower North Island when it hit at 7.55am.

It struck 10km west of Masterton at a depth of 35km and was felt as far as afield as New Plymouth to Nelson.

One person who reported feeling the quake posted on the Wairarapa Times-Age Facebook page saying that it was "a good jolt second a loud rumble".

Another said: "Was loud. Car was shaking in the driveway."

GeoNet duty seismologist Caroline Little says there could be more to come.

Caroline Little says if the quakes have caused damage, it's likely to have been just broken dishes and rattled windows.

This follows an earlier quake of 4.7 magnitude which struck at 7.15am at a depth of 28km.

The fire service confirmed it has not yet received any reports of damage since the 7.55am quake.

This follows a strong quake that rattled Cantabrians last night.

Thousands reported feeling the 4.7 quake that struck at a depth of seven kilometres, 10km southeast of Christchurch at 8:45pm.
